Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary ~ 8 December 2015

"I am the Immaculate Conception."

The Catholic Church celebrates the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary herself. From the very first moment of her life, it was God's plan as her prepared her to be the highly favoured one to become the mother of Son of God, Jesus. She preserved from all stain of original sin from the first moment of her conception in her mother, St.Anne's womb, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race. Many have mistaken that the feast celebrates Jesus conception, but in actually it celebrates Marys Immaculate Conception.

Loving God, We thank you for the example of Mary, whom you chose to be the mother of your only Son, Jesus. She lived her life with love for you and for others. Help us to do the same. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

On this Solemnity, then, by contemplating our beautiful Immaculate Mother, let us also recognize our truest destiny, our deepest vocation: to be loved, to be transformed by love, to be transformed by the beauty of God. Let us look to her, our Mother, and allow her to look upon us, for she is our mother and she loves us so much; let us allow ourselves to be watched over by her so that we may learn how to be more humble, and also more courageous in following the Word of God; to welcome the tender embrace of her Son Jesus, an embrace that gives us life, hope and peace. (Pope Francis, 2nd Sunday of Advent, 8 December 2013)

Reading 1
Genesis 3:9-15, 20
After the man, Adam, had eaten of the tree,
the LORD God called to the man and asked him, Where are you?
He answered, I heard you in the garden;
but I was afraid, because I was naked,
so I hid myself.
Then he asked, Who told you that you were naked?
You have eaten, then,
from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat!
The man replied, The woman whom you put here with me
she gave me fruit from the tree, and so I ate it.
The LORD God then asked the woman,
Why did you do such a thing?
The woman answered, The serpent tricked me into it, so I ate it.

Then the LORD God said to the serpent:
Because you have done this, you shall be banned
from all the animals
and from all the wild creatures;
on your belly shall you crawl,
and dirt shall you eat
all the days of your life.
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will strike at your head,
while you strike at his heel.

The man called his wife Eve,
because she became the mother of all the living.

Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4
R. Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds.
Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him,
his holy arm.
R. Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds.
The LORD has made his salvation known:
in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
toward the house of Israel.
R. Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
break into song; sing praise.
R. Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds.

Reading 2
Ephesians 1:3-6, 11-12
Brothers and sisters:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us in Christ
with every spiritual blessing in the heavens,
as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world,
to be holy and without blemish before him.
In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ,
in accord with the favor of his will,
for the praise of the glory of his grace
that he granted us in the beloved.

In him we were also chosen,
destined in accord with the purpose of the One
who accomplishes all things according to the intention of his will,
so that we might exist for the praise of his glory,
we who first hoped in Christ.

Alleluia
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you;
blessed are you among women.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel
Luke 1:26-38
The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgins name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his Kingdom there will be no end.
But Mary said to the angel,
How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?
And the angel said to her in reply,
The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.
Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.
Then the angel departed from her.

This Advent, show that Jesus is present in our own lives ....

Embrace the spirit of giving, think about how blessed are we and therefore we should be aware of the people in need around us. Let them feel the joy and love.

Giving to others is one way Christians can live their faith especially in the current season of advent. Please be as generous, James 2:17 ".... faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead."

Some of the many ways we can give;
  1. give your time to serve others. (volunteer to serve the community and church)
  2. provide for the needy. (food, clothings, shelter, donations and others)
  3. a simple random act of kindness.

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:17)

In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35)

Feast of Saint Andrew, Apostle ~ 30 November 2015

Andrew was the brother of Peter and he was a follower of Saint John the Baptist. Andrew immediately followed Jesus after John the Baptist revealed that Jesus was Son of God and later said Behold, the Lamb of God! as Jesus walked by him. (John 1:34-40). Therefore, Andrew became the first disciple of Jesus and he then finds his brother Simon and brings him to Jesus. Andrew was known for bring people to Jesus, It was Andrew who brought the boy with five barley loaves and two fish to Jesus which Jesus miraculously multiplies into enough food to feed everyone (John 6:8) and again during the Passover Feast brought a group of Greeks to meet Jesus when Jesus said The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified....when I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all men to myself. (John 12:20-33)

After the death, resurrection and the ascension of Jesus Christ, Andrew travelled around the Black Sea as far as Ukraine and Russia (he is the patron saint of Russia and Ukraine) to evangelise and spread the teaching of Jesus Christ. Andrew is also the Patron Saint of Scotland. Andrew also went to Byzantium (Istanbul in Turkey) and then to Greece. Andrew was martyred by crucifixion at Patras in Achaea in Greece. Andrew was crucified on a saltire cross which is a cross in the shape of an X and that he was tied (instead of nailed)Andrew remained tied to the cross with thick tight ropes for three days and his last words were: "Accept me, O Christ Jesus, whom I saw, whom I love, and in whom I am; accept my spirit in peace in your eternal realm."

Reading 1
Romans 10:9-18
Brothers and sisters:
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord
and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved.
For one believes with the heart and so is justified,
and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved.
The Scripture says,
No one who believes in him will be put to shame.
There is no distinction between Jew and Greek;
the same Lord is Lord of all,
enriching all who call upon him.
For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed?
And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
And how can they hear without someone to preach?
And how can people preach unless they are sent?
As it is written,
How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news!
But not everyone has heeded the good news;
for Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed what was heard from us?
Thus faith comes from what is heard,
and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.
But I ask, did they not hear?
Certainly they did; for

Their voice has gone forth to all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Come after me, says the Lord,

Gospel
Matthew 4:18-22
As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew,
casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.
He said to them,
Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.
At once they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers,
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets.
He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father
and followed him.

How precious is the spirit of generosity and sacrifice

Love grows with gratitude and generous giving
Jesus taught that real giving must come from the heart. A gift that is given with a grudge or for display loses its value. But a gift given out of love, with a spirit of generosity and sacrifice, is precious. The amount or size of the gift doesn't matter as much as the cost to the giver. The poor widow could have kept one of her coins, but instead she recklessly gave away all she had! Jesus praised someone who gave barely a penny - how insignificant a sum - because it was everything she had, her whole living.

Nothing given in love is worthless
What we have to offer may look very small and not worth much, but if we put all we have at the Lord's disposal, no matter how insignificant it may seem, then God can do with it and with us what is beyond our reckoning. Do you give out of love and gratitude for what God has already given to you?
